[Phytomorphology] Perennial herb. The main root is cylindrical. Stems erect, nearly quadrangular above middle, much branched, sparsely hairy. Leaves opposite, petiole densely growing trichomes; leaf blade elliptic to narrowly elliptic, apex acuminate to caudal, base cuneate or broadly cuneate, entire, densely cambered above, densely below. The flowers are greenish-white in color, and they are densely integrated into the flower pellets by the majority of inflorescences. The flower pellets are arranged in spikes on the branches; the sepals are ovate, dry and membranous, apical or hook-shaped; the cymules are fertile. Flowers centered, sterile flowers on both sides, tepals of sterile flowers into hook-shaped burrs, tepals of fertile flowers 5, 2 long and short, often longer than 2 apexes often hooked; stamens 5, opposite to tepals, filaments densely villous at base; staminodes 5, oblong, apex dentate lobed, basally connate with stamen filaments; ovary oblong or obovate; style thin, stigma head shape. Umbilica oblong oval, dark gray. Seeds ovate, russet. Flowering from June to July, fruiting period from August to September.
